Shawnee Baptist Church has a rich heritage having been established in 1923 on property purchased for $15,000. Having begun as a mission Sunday School and organized into a church, it has grown tremendously through the years. The church constructed a beautiful auditorium at 38th and Market Streets, Louisville, KY, in 1948 and later added a new educational building in 1961 for approximately $125,000. The church grew to high attendances of around 400 plus and then, through population shifts, the church went through a period of decline. Thanks to the providence of God and some folks that would not quit, the doors have remained open.
For the past 35 years the church has seen a great spirit of revival and soul winning in 1972- Shawnee Baptist called, Lonnie Mattingly as pastor.. Average attendance grew from the low 60's to averaging 1,000+. The church relocated from the 38th and Market property to the present 11-acre campus on Bank Street in 1977. The property value has gone from a few hundred thousand into the millions. We have witnessed over 200 precious souls saved and baptized each year approaching 700 the past few years. God is continuing to work through the ministry of our new pastor, Dave Delaney. The goal of magnifying Christ is now just as strong as ever. To God be the Glory!
